As a college student, I am always looking for ways to save money and get things for cheap, even free. I came across a site called Freecycle.org a few months ago and would love to tell anyone that needs something but can't afford it, you might be able to get it from free cycle.

Just like a recycling center, members of free cycle give away what they don't want, and sometimes someone from the network might give it away until the item cannot be used anymore. The purpose of the website is to post items that you no longer need, want, or use. It is environmental friendly simply because it reduces the amount of space perfectly usable items take up in a land fill. After all, why throw away a perfect good stroller just because you already have another one. Why not give it to a family that really need it.

If you’re in college like I am, this site is a God sent. I have furnished my entire apartment mostly from things from Free Cycle, and have been very pleased with the site.

Now, keep in mind, these will not always be brand new, expensive items. Most of these items are usable, and are perfect if you don’t have a lot of money to spare. After all they are free, and that is all that matters. And lets face it, with the currently economy situation, we aren't exactly rolling the dough. If you’re surviving off of Ramen Noodles, you can definitely survive off of used tvs, couches, entertainment centers, tables, books, magazines, etc. Yes, that is right, couches, and tables and, entertainment centers oh my! Here is a brief list of what I have received:

  • An old 19 inch zenith t.v. (Works perfectly)
  • A couch and love seat set in good condition
  • An entertainment center for my stero
  • A dinner table
  • A book shelf
  • A lamp
  • Various bath items (many of them hardly used)
  • plates, cups in good condition.
  • 2 Prom dresses in excellent condition

I joined Freecycle in June of 2008, and am an active user. Not only do I receive things, but I give things away. If you have a lot of junk that you do not use, you will love this site tremendously. There are people who would be willing to pick up what you want to throw in the trash. I find it rewarding to give away my things, and the grateful attitude of those those receive what I have to offer.

In order to join, you will need to go to the freecycle website
Once you reach the website, you will need to search for a freecycle network in your area. If your area does not have one, I suggest starting one. The freeycle network is on yahoo groups so you will need to sign up for a yahoo account and get your account verified. This is a wonderful site and have only good things to say about it. Give it a try, what do you have to loose?
